Sounding Roots | An Evening with ShyStella and Ieva Jakusa

On August 26 at 7 PM, SODAS 2123 invites you to gather in the reading room of the Contemporary Art Centre, where performance, storytelling and sound will weave together into a shared artistic experience. 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒂 𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒂 (π‘Ίπ’‰π’šπ‘Ίπ’•π’†π’π’π’‚) and 𝑰𝒆𝒗𝒂 π‘±π’‚π’Œπ’–π’”π’‚ will present research developed during the SODAS 2123 residency programme π‘Ήπ’†π’”π’Šπ’”π’•π’‚π’π’„π’† π‘Ίπ’π’π’ˆ π‘Ήπ’†π’”π’Šπ’…π’†π’π’„π’š. 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒂 𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒂 (π‘Ίπ’‰π’šπ‘Ίπ’•π’†π’π’π’‚) will invite you into the performance π‘²π’‚π’“π’†π’π’Šπ’‚π’ π‘ͺπ’π’Žπ’Žπ’–π’π’Šπ’•π’š π‘Ίπ’Šπ’π’ˆπ’Šπ’π’ˆ, in which communal singing reveals itself as a living cultural practice – one that builds connections, preserves memory, and brings people together for a shared experience. The artists' research draws on Karelian communal singing traditions, archival material from the former Viipuri (Vyborg) district, where the artists' family comes from, and contemporary sound practices. It brings together performance, sound art and collective singing. Tradition is not a frozen inheritance. They understand it as a living process that changes and renews itself through care for one another, dialogue between generations, and people's involvement. During the evening, listeners are invited not only to watch, but also to sing, remember, listen closely, and become part of a shared sonic experience. 𝑰𝒆𝒗𝒂 π‘±π’‚π’Œπ’–π’”π’‚ will present π‘¨π’ˆπ’“π’†π’†π’Žπ’†π’π’•, π‘·π’†π’π’…π’Šπ’π’ˆ – an artistic research project about sutartinΔ—s (Lithuanian polyphonic songs), unfolding through storytelling, listening and shared experience. The artist uses sutartinΔ—s as a way of thinking about oral culture. She asks what happens to living traditions when they become heritage that is preserved and overseen by institutions. Is it possible to pass on knowledge through listening, repetition and reliance on collective memory, rather than solely through archives and written sources? Stories, field recordings and notes from research carried out in Vilnius gradually become a continuation of the living storytelling tradition. At the end of the evening, each participant will take away a short story and will be invited to tell it to three other people. In this way the story will continue to travel from mouth to mouth, changing slightly each time – just like all living traditions. The event is part of the international residency programme π‘Ήπ’†π’”π’Šπ’”π’•π’‚π’π’„π’† π‘Ίπ’π’π’ˆ π‘Ήπ’†π’”π’Šπ’…π’†π’π’„π’š. The programme is dedicated to exploring singing and the collective voice as political, social and communal practices that open up possibilities for solidarity, care and shared action. π‘Άπ’“π’ˆπ’‚π’π’Šπ’›π’†π’“: SODAS 2123 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒏𝒆𝒓: Contemporary Art Centre Curators and coordinators of the SODAS 2123 residency programme π‘Ήπ’†π’”π’Šπ’”π’•π’‚π’π’„π’† π‘Ίπ’π’π’ˆ π‘Ήπ’†π’”π’Šπ’…π’†π’π’„π’š: AgnΔ— BagdΕΎiΕ«naitΔ—, JΕ«ra Elena Ε edytΔ— π‘Ήπ’†π’”π’Šπ’”π’•π’‚π’π’„π’† π‘Ίπ’π’π’ˆ π‘Ήπ’†π’”π’Šπ’…π’†π’π’„π’š is funded by the Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Culture of the Nordic Council of Ministers.
