SPANISH DIALOGUES: Óscar Navarro, Pilar Rubio, Lithuanian Symphonic Wind Orchestra | VILNIUS WINDS

At the festival's opening concert in the LVSO concert hall, the music of the Spanish composer Óscar Navarro will resound, conducted by the composer himself. Navarro is one of the most prominent figures on today's international wind music scene. His work transcends the traditional frameworks of wind music and frees the orchestra from the strict academic standard: he combines a Spanish identity with global styles, transfers the principles of film soundtracks into concert music, and tells vivid stories through sound, not shying away from theatricality – on stage the musicians often even become actors conveying the colour of different cultures. Óscar Navarro is a Spanish composer and conductor, one of the most prominent figures on today's international wind music scene. His output spans opuses from monumental symphonic poems to virtuosic concertos for soloists and wind orchestra, and music for films. Navarro's compositions are marked by an exceptional temperament, melodiousness and cinematic power, shaped by his film music studies at the prestigious University of Southern California (USC) in the USA. Navarro leads a symphony orchestra named after him (the Óscar Navarro Symphony Orchestra) and collaborates with the world's top ensembles. He has received prizes and nominations from the Spanish Film Academy and the “Hollywood Music in Media Awards”, and in 2018 he won the “Buma Brass Award” (Netherlands) for best international composer for his substantial contribution to wind orchestra music. Pilar Rubio Albalá is an internationally acclaimed violinist, winner of many national competitions, performing in the prestigious halls of Spain and abroad. Born in Madrid, the artist completed her studies in Spain (Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid) and honed her skills in Germany (Hochschule für Musik Freiburg) and the USA (Indiana University String Academy). She combines her solo career with work in renowned orchestras, activity with the ensemble “OctOver” and teaching at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid.
