St. Bartholomew's Fair
The Vilnius Old Town Renewal Agency invites Vilnius residents and city guests to immerse themselves in living history – on 22–23 August, Town Hall Square will once again turn into a late medieval and Renaissance city. Held for the 14th time, St. Bartholomew's Fair revives the old guild culture of Vilnius, whose roots reach back to 1495. The festival will traditionally begin with a ceremonial procession of craftsmen carrying historical guild banners, stretching from the Gates of Dawn all the way to Town Hall Square. On both days of the fair, from 11:00 to 20:00 , visitors can enjoy a wealth of activities: from street theatre performances and jesters' pranks to knights' fights and 17th–18th century townsfolk dances. This is a unique chance not only to watch but to try the old crafts yourself. Masters will invite you to throw a Gothic pot, to boil traditional soap, and to discover the secrets of goldsmithing, bookbinding and Gothic script. Visitors will be able to mint a commemorative coin, while a mobile 15th-century oven will fill the air with the aroma of freshly baked rye bread and honey cakes. The festival will culminate with a tasting of a historical beverage by the Duke's retinue, dances by the „Festa Cortese“ troupe and concerts by the bands „Remdih“ and „Hansanova“. Come and be curious about the living history of Vilnius – see you in Town Hall Square!
