Straw Garden Weaving | for Seniors

Throughout Lithuania, straw gardens (sodai) held not only decorative but also ritual significance – they symbolise a model of the universe and are therefore associated with wellbeing and protection in life. They were hung above a baby's cradle or a wedding table, and homes were decorated with them in preparation for Christmas Eve or Easter, in the belief that harmony would prevail at home and in one's relationship with the world and oneself. Often the sodas become an inseparable part of a home's interior, giving a sense of identity and continuity. The tradition of straw gardens is inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
