Students' choice: a screening of „Skalvija“ Film Academy films
We invite you to the very last screening of the „Skalvija“ Film Academy, with films selected by the future second-year students – Ieva Rupeikaitė, Danielius Urbonis, Dmitrij Belčikov, Gintarė Zubrickaitė and Mėta Mataitytė. At the screening you will see five different films by Film Academy creators, exploring a person's relationship with themselves, their surroundings and other people. The works stand out for their varied styles – from experimental and surrealist cinema to simpler, more sensitive storytelling. We will also invite you to watch three short essays about the village of Kintai, made during this year's camp and shot on 16 mm film. The screening will take place on 24 August at 19:00 at the alternative culture space „Utopija“ . After the screening we invite you to take part in a short Q&A with the creators , and afterwards – to stay longer and enjoy music played from records by Vytautas Juozėnas aka Škicas! Everyone interested in cinema made by young people is welcome! The films will be shown with Lithuanian and English subtitles. The screening is free. PROGRAMME: • ABNORMAL (dir. Ugnė Žydelytė) 3.28 / 2024 Selected for the programme by Ieva: „This is a film that examines complicated human relationships and people's superficial behaviour. Such behaviour becomes, even for serious adults, a curtain that allows them to hide an uncomfortable truth – the problems of violence, addiction, lies and emotional distance within a family. The question arises: in what mood does a person live who grows up among such adults? This film caught my eye because of its distinctive style, which made it easier to enter the atmosphere it creates and to go deeper into the themes it explores.“ • LABYRINTH (dir. Mantas Bitinaitis) 10.30 / 2025 Selected for the programme by Danielius: „I chose Mantas Bitinaitis's 2025 graduation film „Labirintas“ for the programme because it gives us a chance to discuss what makes something distinctive. Speaking of the film's content, and especially comparing it with most of the work made at the „Skalvija“ Film Academy, one could say that this project is marked by a certain good kind of simplicity. The film has no „Skalvija-style“ alternativeness or great narrative leaps. But that is exactly my argument for why I chose this film as exceptional. As for the technical quality and the acting, I don't even dare to speak – I think every viewer should judge that for themselves.“ • WAVE (dir. Saulė Baublytė) 4.08 / 2024 Selected for the programme by Dmitrij: „In her 2024 graduation work „Banga“, Saulė Baublytė explores the boundaries between fiction and experimental short film using fast, unconventional editing, an unsettling soundtrack, strange costumes and analogue animation. With these means she creates an eccentric, surrealist visual world. In the film Saulė tells the story of a lonely individual, in which every viewer can find a theme close to them or create a personal interpretation.“ • UNTITLED (dir. Anikė Jefremovaitė) 6.34 / 2023 Selected for the programme by Gintarė: „„Be pavadinimo“ draws you in with the philosophy it explores, revealed through unusual and unfamiliar characters, space and time. The film interested me because it made me think about the definition of cinema itself, about the boundaries, possibilities and meaning of this medium.“ • ME WITHOUT AN ALGORITHM (dir. Ūla Misiukonytė) 5.19 / 2025 Selected for the programme by Mėta: „The film „Aš be algoritmo“, made in 2025 by Ula Misiukonytė, opens up many different meanings for the viewer and allows the work to be interpreted in one's own way. In the film we hear the opinions of various people – from musicians to children – their answers to the questions they are asked and the life lessons they can share. I think this is important, because it helps us better understand how people feel in certain situations. We cannot always talk about such things openly, so other people's experiences help us understand that we are not alone and that others go through similar feelings and experiences. The film is also interesting visually. Many things in it are conveyed indirectly, so the viewer can interpret the images in their own way, notice details and sense the human emotions being conveyed. Although the film is shot in black and white, this does not prevent its emotional and visual power from coming through.“ You can follow event news on the „Skalvija“ Film Academy website and social networks.
