Summer Moods | Julius Maknickas and Emanuil Ivanov
The first Summer Moods evening will begin where the city briefly slows down – in the garden of the Carmelite Monastery of the Gates of Dawn. Behind the gates, in the very heart of Vilnius Old Town, a cello and piano will sound for a small audience, and the festival opening will become the first invitation to a new summer ritual: a historic garden, dinner before the concert, conversations, summer light and music from very close. The festival will be opened by cellist Julius Maknickas and pianist Emanuil Ivanov – two young-generation artists whose biographies already include the Royal Academy of Music in London, international competitions, Carnegie Hall in New York and Wigmore Hall in London. They belong to that generation of performers for whom classical music is not a frozen form, but a living, sensitive and very precise conversation with the present. In Vilnius, the duo will perform a programme for cello and piano, full of inner drama, shifting light and subtle tension. The evening will open with Witold Lutosławski’s “Grave” and Johannes Brahms’s Cello Sonata No. 1 in E minor. In the second part, the programme will move into Claude Debussy’s impressionist world and the rarely performed Frank Bridge Sonata in D minor – music in which one can hear the anxiety, elegance and fragility of early 20th-century Europe. Before the concert, festival guests are invited to a musical aperitif in the garden: a glass of wine, light snacks and a slow introduction to the evening. This is not a formal appendage to the evening, but part of the Summer Moods rhythm: time to arrive early, to take one’s time, to be in the space, to talk, and to come to the concert already attuned to the place.
