Summer Moods | Martynas Švėgžda von Bekker

On July 9, the garden of the Carmelite Monastery of the Gate of Dawn will host a solo violin program by Martynas Švėgžda von Bekker – a meditative journey from the Baroque to the present day, where a single instrument opens up as an entire world of music. This program invites you to listen to the violin up close – its tranquility, colors, inner tension, and virtuosic sound. It is framed by two of the world’s most famous versions of “Ave Maria”: the evening will begin with J. S. Bach and Charles Gounod’s “Ave Maria”, and will conclude with Franz Schubert’s “Ave Maria”. Between these two musical anchors, a wide world of solo violin will unfold: from Baroque architecture and polyphonic sound to Andriy Shtoharenko’s “Fantasy”, Vytautas Barkauskas’s “Partita”, and pieces by Martynas Švėgžda von Bekker himself from the cycle “Sound and Word” (“Le son et la parole”). Martynas Švėgžda von Bekker is a laureate of international competitions who has performed in Europe, the US, and Asia, collaborating with prominent orchestras, conductors, and performers. Coming from a famous family of Lithuanian artists, he grew up surrounded by music and art traditions, studied in Vilnius and Hamburg, and has taught at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, the Hamburg Conservatory, Boston University, and Berklee College of Music. The concerts of the “Summer Moods” festival take place in an intimate space of the Vilnius Old Town, where music blends with the evening light, the silence of the garden, and the lively backdrop of the city. The old monastery garden opens its gates to only a hundred listeners, giving the concerts a rare sense of intimacy. This is a slow summer experience in the city: before the concerts, listeners are invited to an aperitif in the garden, followed by an evening of music under the open sky. The aperitif is not included in the concert ticket price, and seating is limited. Those wishing to attend are kindly requested to register by phone: +370 621 77016. Concert program Johann Sebastian Bach – Charles Gounod “Ave Maria” Johann Sebastian Bach Adagio in G minor from Sonata for Solo Violin No.
