Summer Moods | Vladimiras Tarasovas

On July 30, in the garden of the Gate of Dawn Carmelite Monastery, world-renowned percussionist Vladimiras Tarasovas will perform his unique piece "Walking through the Sounds of Vilnius," created for Vilnius' 700th anniversary. This nearly hour-long solo performance is an auditory journey through the city's history, its streets, and the traces left by different nations, religions, and cultures. V. Tarasovas perceives the sound of Vilnius as a polyphonic ensemble created over seven centuries, where the memory of each city community lives on. Walking through the old streets of Vilnius, past churches of different confessions, the courtyard of the former Great Synagogue, and the Vilna Gaon's House, numerous layers of the city's history unfold. Some are preserved in architecture, others in barely visible fragments, yet their resonance remains palpable. To convey this history, V. Tarasovas employs percussion – instruments that have accompanied humanity since ancient times, long before melodic instruments emerged. According to the artist, percussion allows access to what cannot be precisely notated: a deeper memory, a sense of time, and the echo of history preserved in the city. Vladimiras Tarasovas is one of the most important figures in Lithuanian and European free jazz, a member of the legendary Vyacheslav Ganelin, V. Tarasov, and Vladimir Chekasin trio. His work spans solo music, jazz, contemporary art, theatre, and cinema. The artist has performed with prominent European and US improvisational music creators, led the Lithuanian Art Orchestra, composed music for plays and films, and organized visual art exhibitions. The "Summer Moods" festival concerts take place in an intimate setting in Vilnius Old Town, where music merges with the evening light, the garden's tranquility, and the vibrant city backdrop. The old monastery garden opens its doors to only one hundred listeners, giving each concert a special sense of intimacy. This is a slow summer experience in the city: before the concert, listeners are invited for an aperitif in the garden, and later the evening continues with open-air music.
