The Canary's Prophecy (a documentary performance about Oscar Milosz)
The length of one part is 1 hr 40 min. Interval 20 min. Naujasis teatras presents a documentary performance in 2 complete parts about Oscar Milosz, „The Canary's Prophecy“ . The performance reveals different stages of the life and work of the poet, diplomat and mystic O. Milosz. Part 1 „Seven Solitudes“ . Here you will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the poet's grandparents, parents and his life up to the age of 33. Oscar Vladislas de Lubicz Milosz was born and grew up on the Čerėja estate. After the partition of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania between Russia and Prussia, the locality belonged to the Russian Empire (Mogilev Governorate). Today it is Belarus (Vitebsk Region). The poet's childhood and youth were difficult: descended from an old family of Grand Duchy of Lithuania nobility, but receiving no love or tenderness in childhood, he remained lonely all his life. The Parisian bohemia of the late 19th century and the everyday life of the provinces of tsarist Russia at the beginning of the 20th century – all of this shaped the young poet's personality, his relationships with people, his creative and spiritual searchings. Naturally, you will be able to enjoy Oscar's verses in French and Lithuanian. His first collection of poetry „Le Poème des Décadences“ („The Poem of Decadences“, 1894) is full of painful emotions and symbols of disillusionment with life, imbued with cynicism and the cry of death. In the second – „Les Sept Solitudes“ („Seven Solitudes“, 1906) – the poet deepens still further the sorrowful thought of his loneliness. The collection contains the sorrow of the whole world over a lost childhood, longing for a true home, the search for meaning and a hopeless sense of meaninglessness and the emptiness of being. And how could there be no love? There will be that too... How did Milosz find God, having been raised in an atheistic spirit?.. What event determined the great poet's desire to unlock secrets and hear the whisper of the canaries' souls?.. At that time the First World War is raging; Oscar continues to write verses and writes three mystery plays. „This is truly extraordinary beauty – I think I will be able to die in peace. I write day and night, until five or six in the morning, and at noon I sit down again at my writing desk. I no longer eat or sleep. P.S. You know, one must work.“ All this and more, dear viewers, you will see when you come. Part 2 „Ma Lituanie“. „The name of that land – Lithuania – took hold of my mind and my feelings. / I long to reveal it to you. / Come! In spirit I will lead you to a strange land, misty, deep, rustling…“ These words of the Lithuanian poet Oscar Milosz, who wrote in French, cast a spell like a magical incantation, seize the imagination and are remembered for a long time. Milosz, though raised in a Polish spirit, at a fateful moment for the Lithuanian nation considered himself a Lithuanian and called himself so publicly and everywhere. He said: „I, a French poet, rightly or wrongly held in esteem by avant-garde circles, hoped to do more useful work by remaining beneath the modest Lithuanian cross.“ This part reveals the work Oscar Milosz did for the good of Lithuania. Milosz was a man of the birds; the winged ones did not fear him and fed straight from his hands. It seems he felt within himself a vocation to save from destruction not only the birds but all of humanity. Oscar was a philosopher, a metaphysician, who amazed also with the accuracy of his prophecies. This part reveals the poet's mystical spirit.
