The Golden Apple Tree and the Wine Well || A Fairy Tale for Children

„The Golden Apple Tree and the Wine Well“ is one of the most beautiful and popular Lithuanian fairy tales. It is a magical story about an Orphan oppressed by her Stepmother. As in every fairy tale of this kind, it is full of obstacles created by evil: a wicked witch, along with her daughters, torments the maiden by assigning insurmountable tasks, but good, aided by magical forces, ultimately triumphs and frees the Orphan at the end of the tale, marrying her to a young King. For the creators of the performance, this production offers the compelling opportunity to use forms of visual theatre that belong more to the art of cinema than to theatre. Although the fairy tale contains many folk songs and verses, the narrative in the performance is created more through images. Spectators will see various visual theatre devices popular since Ancient Greek times, such as panoramas, myrioramas, dioramas, thaumatropes, laterna magica, myriorama cards, as well as shadow theatre. „I first staged this fairy tale with the theatre enthusiasts' society „Teatrinės iniciatyvos“ (premiere December 18, 1997). Back then, I also created the scenography. At that time, Dainius Vengelis, an actor from Vilnius' „Senamiesčio teatras“ who performed this monodrama with puppets, created his diploma performance based on that show while completing his Master's degree at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre in 2009 (scenographer Neringa Keršulytė). Returning to this fairy tale at „Lėlė“, I drew upon a collection of spectacles and optical metamorphoses used by puppeteers centuries ago (mechanical theatre, diorama, myriorama, moire, Jacob's Ladder, Laterna Magica, etc.). These forms of spectacle are today attributed to the history of cinematography.“ (dir. R. Driežis)
