The Many Roles of a Curator | Adomas Narkevičius Talk

On August 5, at 6 PM, we invite you to a presentation by art critic and curator Adomas Narkevičius titled "The Many Roles of a Curator: Between Ideas and Everyday Life" at the cafe-bar "Estafetė". The event is free and will be held in English. Adomas will discuss the extremely diverse roles of a curator – from exhibitions in museums and project spaces to events and alternative education programs, national pavilions, and international biennials. Adomas will talk about these and other forms of curating based on his professional experience: curating exhibitions at "Cell Project Space", one of London's longest-running independent spaces; working on a seven-decade-spanning exhibition at MO Museum; residency and alternative education programs at "Rupert"; as well as organizing the Kaunas Biennial and the Latvian Pavilion at the Venice Art Biennale. Drawing on his daily work leading the "Upė Foundation", established in London at the end of 2025, he will also consider what it means to "curate" a newly established organization. The presentation will pay special attention to the specifics of curatorial work – the constant back-and-forth between ideas, artistic conversation, and practical tasks: negotiations, conflict resolution, seeking compromises, and other joys and challenges arising from working with artists, institutions, sponsors, and teams of various sizes. → A Q&A session will follow the presentation. The presentation is part of the Emerging Curators Platform (PKP) program – an educational and mentorship program for emerging curators, aiming to strengthen practical curatorial skills and foster collaboration in the contemporary art field. This year's platform curator is Ona Juciūtė. SODAS 2123 activities are supported by the Lithuanian Culture Council and Vilnius City Municipality.
