Tour of the Church of the Ascension of the Lord and the former Missionary Monastery

The Church Heritage Museum invites you to tours of the Missionary Ensemble. This is not only a unique opportunity to see one of the most beautiful churches in Vilnius – the Church of the Ascension of the Lord – but also the first chance to visit the premises of the missionary monastery and the church crypts. In 1685, the monks of the Congregation of the Mission arrived in Vilnius and eventually settled on Savior's Hill, in the Renaissance Sanguškos Palace, which was donated to them by Catherine Sobieska-Radziwiłł. Just a decade later, Jonas Teofilis and Aleksandra Plater, impressed by the missionaries' activities, funded the construction of the Church of the Ascension of the Lord. The large monastic community organized and carried out charitable and educational activities, missions in parishes, maintained an almshouse, cared for impoverished nobles, and their well-kept and beautiful gardens "were unmatched in the city of Vilnius." During the tour, we will explore the church and part of the monastery premises. As we journey through the ensemble, we will discuss its transformation and adaptation for the needs of a prison, hospital, workshops, and schools; looking out the windows, we will imagine the idyllic view of gardens and orchards with hundreds of fruit trees, and we will descend into the impressive church cellars, opened for the first time. Meeting point – Church of the Ascension of the Lord, gate at the intersection of Subačiaus and Žiupronių streets. Tour duration – 1.5 hours. Tickets for the tour can be purchased on the Paysera Tickets system. Tickets will not be available for purchase at the tour location. Comfortable, warm clothing and footwear are recommended.
