Tour "Surrounded by Spirits" at the Ethnography Repository

We invite you to a new tour of the Ethnography Repository! You will discover how the old Lithuanian worldview differed from today's. In ancient times, it was believed that a person's entire environment was full of spirits: the souls of the deceased repenting in the surrounding trees, streams, and ovens; guardian house spirits living in various parts of the home; and Death or Illness lurking nearby. To live happily, one had to know how to communicate with otherworldly beings: to honor and please some, to care for others, and to ward off the third kind with protective signs. On this tour, you will understand how this worldview influenced human life in Lithuania until the early 20th century: you will hear about the ways people sought to gain the favor of otherworldly beings and ensure success in their endeavors, what practices were used to guard against lurking supernatural dangers, and what mystical methods were used for healing. It will also become clear whether spirits were invoked in matters of love. Duration: 45 min.
