Tour "Surrounded by Spirits"

How does today's – modern, influenced by Enlightenment ideas – worldview fundamentally differ from the old one, prevalent in pre-modern times? Back then, it was believed that the entire human environment was full of spirits: in the trees growing around, in streams, the souls of the dead repenting in the oven, guardian house spirits living in various places in the home, and Death or Illness lurking nearby. To live happily, one needed to communicate with otherworldly beings – to honor and please some, to take care of others, and to ward off a third group with protective signs. On this tour, we will explore how this worldview influenced human life in Lithuania until the early 20th century. We will talk about the ways people sought to gain the favor of otherworldly beings and ensure success in their endeavors, about practices designed to protect against constantly lurking supernatural dangers, and about mystical healing methods. Finally, we will discuss whether spirits were also invoked in matters of love.
