Unveiling Jonas Basanavičius: The Lithuanian Indiana Jones | European Archaeology Days

This exhibition focuses on the lesser-known archaeological and anthropological work of Dr. Jonas Basanavičius. It discusses the most important stages of the doctor's life that shaped his view of the Lithuanian past. The exhibition presents the archaeological monuments of Lithuania researched by J. Basanavičius and the theories of Lithuanian origin he formulated. The aim is to reveal his personality through personal belongings, and his scientific work, characterized by perseverance and curiosity, through archaeological finds and a collection of skulls gathered from ancient burial sites. Basanavičius's research was significant for the nascent Lithuanian scientific archaeology of the late 19th – early 20th century, and thus did not go unnoticed by archaeologists of that time. Their evaluations are presented in the exhibition, supplemented by the views of contemporary scientists on the doctor's archaeological and anthropological work. The example of Basanavičius's research aims to reveal the methodology of archaeological research in interwar Lithuania, which testifies to the spirit of that period. On June 13 at 3 PM, the exhibition opening will take place, during which the exhibition organizers – Master's students from the Department of Archaeology, Faculty of History, Vilnius University – will deliver a presentation titled "More Than a Signatory? Tracing the Past with Dr. Jonas Basanavičius" and invite visitors to explore the exhibition together until 6 PM. Organizer: Vilnius University Where? At the House of Signatories (LNM) (Pilies g. 26, Vilnius). When? June 13, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Free admission!
