Screening of the feature film "SONGS OF KAMUI"

Directed by Hiroshi Sugawara, the feature film "SONGS OF KAMUI" is based on the life of Yukie Chiri, an early 20th-century collector of Ainu folklore who played a vital role in preserving the culture of the indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido. Despite facing bullying and discrimination as an Ainu woman, she dedicated her life to preserving her people's culture for future generations. She passed away at the age of just 19, but her book "Ainu Shin’yo Shu"—which for the first time recorded and translated into Japanese the Ainu folklore that had previously been passed down only through oral tradition—perfectly captured the spirit of her people and left an indelible impression on people around the world. The film was produced in 2023 in collaboration with the town of Higashikawa on Hokkaido Island. Duration: 125 min. Free admission, no registration required. In Japanese with English subtitles.
