VGS DISCUSSION: Uncovering Gallery Culture

The modern, contemporary history and culture of art galleries spans two centuries, whereas ours counts barely three decades, since the first art galleries in Lithuania only appeared once the country became independent. While in the second half of the 19th century Europe saw the rise of exhibitions by "rejected" salon artists, and technological progress gave rise to a growing middle class and the forerunners of today's art galleries, in Lithuania the 19th century saw the closure of Vilnius University and the Museum of Antiquities. Later, during the Soviet era, state-controlled Artists' Union salons dominated, the purchase of antiques was prohibited by law, and artists' genuine explorations remained confined to their studios, where an unofficial art market took shape. This historical experience undoubtedly influences the current gallery culture in Lithuania.
