Vilnius Festival. Recital and Premiere by Andrius Žlabys with the State Vilnius Quartet
Performers: STATE VILNIUS QUARTET Soloist ANDRIUS ŽLABYS (piano) Programme: JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH – French Overture in B minor, BWV 831 LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN – Piano Sonata No. 30 in E major, op. 109 ANDRIUS ŽLABYS – "Movement" for piano and strings; Work for piano and string quartet (world premiere, title to be announced) "Every hall has subtle differences shaped by its interior and lighting. The Philharmonic Hall, for instance, is marvellous. It resonates on its own — you barely need to play..." the pianist Andrius Žlabys once said in an interview. But he will play! On the evening of 7 June, at the Vilnius Festival, on the Grand Stage of the Philharmonic. The US-based, internationally acclaimed, Grammy-nominated pianist is known for his "enchanting interpretation" (The Plain Dealer), "multi-layered musical perception" (The Greenville News), and "refined artistry" (The New York Sun). Žlabys performs with the world's most celebrated ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Cleveland and Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestras, and distinguished soloists; he plays at New York's Avery Fisher Hall and Carnegie Hall, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Buenos Aires' Teatro Colón, London's Wigmore Hall, Vienna's Musikverein, and Tokyo's Suntory Hall. The first half of the concert is a solo recital featuring works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven. Žlabys' well-known affinity for Bach's music will be on full display as he performs the French-style suite known as the French Overture in B minor, published in 1735. Beethoven's Sonata No. 30 in E major is one of the composer's final three works in this genre (1820), its lyrical pages imbued with the intimate romanticism characteristic of his late period. The second half will feature works by Žlabys himself, performed with the State Vilnius Quartet — a highly active, prolific ensemble now in its latest generation of musicians. We will hear a new work for piano and string quartet, as well as "Movement" for piano and strings, composed at the outbreak of the events in Ukraine in 2014. The piece grew from those feelings and thoughts and is dedicated to the victims of war. Žlabys said at the time: "I feel solidarity with Ukraine — that threat looms over Lithuania too. This work carries a hidden sense of dark foreboding."
