Vilnius – Samogitian Tough? Absolutely!
Did you know that Vilnius has a Samogitian character? This journey begins at the Monument of King Mindaugas, where the first foundations of our state were laid – I dare say, with a distinctly Samogitian toughness! After all, our great rulers – from Mindaugas and Gediminas to Vytautas – built their power relying on the loyalty and unbreakable strength of the Samogitians! Do you think Vilnius is just the dreams of dukes and baroque curves? What if I told you that without Samogitian stubbornness, Vilnius would sound very different today: from the dust on Simonas Daukantas’s shoes to the intrigues of Žemaitė’s ‘shawl’ and the strong characters who shaped the capital? And if the closure of Vilnius University had not ‘extinguished’ the early 19th-century Samogitian nobility’s Lithuanian movement at the university, and if that movement had grown into a great national revival with a powerful Samogitian code?! How would Vilnius residents speak today…? Come to the tour “Samogitian Tough Vilnius” and see the city through the prism of character. The tour is free, but at the end of the tour you are welcome to tip the guide.
