Voice and Bass (Hungary)

The renowned Hungarian jazz duo Voice and Bass — Ágnes Lakatos and Tibor Csuhaj-Barna — is coming to the Music Magic Club. Both performers have taught at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music for many years and have extensive stage and creative experience. Ágnes is a Doctor of Arts and a prominent jazz vocalist who won a gold medal at Cantata Mondial, the world’s largest vocal music festival and competition. Tibor is one of Hungary’s best-known double bass players; over more than three decades he has performed in Europe, the United States, Israel and Asia, and composed and arranged music. This evening is both a concert and an opportunity to get to know these interesting performers. Between pieces, Ágnes and Tibor will talk about their work. The programme includes original works from the duo’s new album, jazz standards and songs specially arranged for this line-up. *** Ágnes Lakatos is a Hungarian jazz vocalist and educator, associate professor at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, and has been performing actively since the late eighties. She holds a Doctor of Liberal Arts (DLA), received a Fulbright scholarship in Chicago in 2023, and won a gold medal at Cantata Mondial, the world’s largest vocal music festival and competition, in 2004. Lakatos has led masterclasses and lectured at music academies and conservatories in Germany, Italy, Estonia, Israel and the United States, and performed in many European countries, Israel and the US. Alongside her solo work, she has led the Jazz Voices choir since 2000 and has received significant awards for her teaching. Tibor Csuhaj-Barna is a Hungarian jazz double bass player, composer, arranger and associate professor at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, where he has taught double bass since 2008. Over more than three decades on stage, he has played with many Hungarian jazz ensembles and composed and arranged music for various line-ups; his discography includes a long list of albums and original compositions. His touring has taken him from many European festivals to Asia, the United States and Israel. He is also invited to teach and lead masterclasses at music academies and conservatories abroad, including in Jerusalem, Rome and Hangzhou. In 2018 he became a Doctor of Arts, and in 2024 he obtained habilitation.
