Wooden Šnipiškės | A Tour in Vilnius

Close by and yet infinitely far, seemingly a city but somehow also a village, luxury right next door while across the street stand shacks — you might call it romantic, until you're faced with a lack of basic amenities… all of this is Šnipiškės. Rarely will you find a „village“ in the middle of a European capital, but Vilnius has exactly that – its own distinctive district of wooden architecture right next to tall steel business towers. This part of Šnipiškės is called Skansenas or Šiaudinė. A little further on is Piromontas, smaller and built of brick. The history of Šnipiškės, the struggles of its residents for the right to live as they're accustomed to, its surroundings and views can charm, provoke, surprise, sadden and amuse in equal measure. If nothing else, there's no shortage of contrasts here. Getting to know Šnipiškės takes time, so I invite you to give it that time now, because that very same time changes everything quickly.
