<p>There's a place in Vilnius you simply can't miss. Even if your feet are tired, even if your itinerary is already packed. <strong>Gediminas Castle Tower</strong> – it's not just an ancient structure. It's the city seen from above, history felt from within, and Lithuania – understood in a whole new way.</p> <p>The Tower has stood on Castle Hill since the 14th century. Vilnius grew around it. Rulers and armies fought over it. And all that time it stood – as a sign that this is the center.</p> <h2>How to get up?</h2> <p>There are two options:</p> <ul> <li><strong>On foot</strong> through <a href="/en/see/hill-park">Hill Park</a> – about 15–20 minutes from the Old Town. The path is winding but pleasant, especially in the mornings or evenings.</li> <li><strong>By funicular</strong> – short, comfortable, perfect with kids or tired legs. The stop is on Arsenalo Street.</li> </ul> <p>Both paths lead to the same spot – to the square in front of the tower, from which the first "aha!" moment unfolds.</p> <h2>What awaits at the top?</h2> <p>On Castle Hill – it's not just the tower. Here flows the entire mystery of Vilnius:</p> <ul> <li>An observation deck with a <strong>panorama of the Old Town roofs, Neris and Vilnelė</strong></li> <li>A museum inside the tower – archaeological finds, ancient weapons, knights' armor, and stories about castle life</li> <li>The Lithuanian tricolor, waving at the top – visible from almost any point in the city</li> <li>Excavated castle walls and defensive fortifications around</li> </ul> <p>Some visitors spend 20 minutes at the top. Others – two hours. It depends on how deep you want to delve.</p> <h2>A little history – without a list of dates</h2> <p>Gediminas – the creator of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania – established the capital here in the 14th century. Legend says that in a dream he heard an iron wolf howling on the hill, and that was a sign: a city must grow here.</p> <p>The city grew. The castle was expanded, strengthened, changed. Part of it collapsed during wars, part – naturally disintegrated. It's a city within a city, where buildings, courtyards, and centuries of history are so intertwined that you can wander here for hours without a map.</p> <h2>13 Courtyards – 13 Stories</h2> <p>The current university ensemble consists of <strong>13 courtyards</strong>, named after famous alumni and professors. We challenge you – find them all. Each courtyard has its own character, its own atmosphere. There swings <strong>Foucault's pendulum</strong>. It slowly, throughout the day, gradually changes its position – and thus proves that the Earth rotates around its axis. The only one of its kind in Lithuania.</p> <h2>Library: 5 Million Books and One Unique Copy</h2> <p>Vilnius University Library is easy to find – and very easy to get lost in. More than <strong>5 million publications and manuscripts</strong> are stored here. It is one of the largest libraries in the region.</p> <p>But quantity is not the most important thing. The library preserves <strong>one of two known original copies of Martynas Mažvydas Catechism in the world</strong> – the first Lithuanian book, printed in 1547. The second copy is in Königsberg. Only two. In the whole world.</p> <h2>From Golden Thoughts to Amber</h2> <p>After leaving the library – it's just 260 steps to the <a href="/en/see/amber-museum-gallery">Amber Museum Gallery</a>. If you haven't visited yet – it's definitely worth a stop. And if you've already been – well then, head straight to <a href="/en/see/st-annes-church">St. Anne's Church</a>, which is even closer to the university.</p>
