<p>There are buildings that just stand there. And there are those that people stop and stare at. <strong>St. Anne's Church</strong> belongs to the second category – and even Napoleon understood that.</p> <p>When his army marched through Vilnius in 1812, he supposedly said that he wished he could take this church in the palm of his hand and carry it to Paris. Whether this is true or a legend – it doesn't matter. What matters is that this building has been affecting people in this way for over 500 years.</p> <h2>Red Bricks and Gothic Grace</h2> <p>The church was built around 1500. But there's nothing simple about it – <strong>the facade is composed of 33 different shaped bricks</strong>, which create a unique pattern. Tall, slender towers rise like blades, and the entire building appears lighter than such a large stone structure should be.</p> <p>This is Late Gothic – one of the best examples of this style in the entire Baltic region, or perhaps even beyond.</p> <h2>Nearby – the no less beautiful Bernardine Church</h2> <p>Right next door stands the Bernardine Church – larger, more massive, different. The two churches side by side form one of Vilnius' most beautiful corners. Between them is a small square with a sculpture of Adam Mickiewicz.</p> <p>This is a place that appears on almost every Vilnius visitor's itinerary – and for good reason.</p> <h2>Inside – Silence and Sacredness</h2> <p>St. Anne's Church is active – masses are held here. Therefore, the interior is not a museum: it is a living space where silence, the scent of incense, and golden hues prevail. Admission is free, but one must adhere to the rules accepted within the church.</p> <h2>How to get here?</h2> <p>The church stands at <strong>Maironio Street 8</strong>, right next to the heart of <a href="/en/see/vilnius-old-town">Vilnius Old Town</a>. From <a href="/en/see/gediminas-castle-tower">Gediminas Castle Tower</a> – just 10 minutes on foot. From <a href="/en/see/uzupis">Užupis</a> – even closer.</p> <p>The best time is morning or late afternoon, when the sun hits the facade and the bricks acquire a warmer hue. A camera is not essential, but if you have one – you'll regret not taking it with you.</p>
