Lithuanian Railway Museum

The Lithuanian Railway Museum – one of Vilnius' most underrated attractions – operates right on the grounds of Vilnius railway station. Here you can touch, climb aboard, and closely inspect dozens of authentic steam locomotives, diesel engines, passenger carriages, and specialist rolling stock accumulated over more than a century of railway history. Open-Air Exhibition: Hands-On History The museum's greatest asset is its spacious open-air exhibition featuring several dozen pieces of railway equipment: steam locomotives from the early 20th century, Soviet-era diesel engines, restored passenger carriages, and maintenance vehicles. Unlike many museums, the exhibits are not roped off – visitors can climb into cabs, sit in the driver's seat, and examine mechanical details up close. For photographers, it is a genuine find. Indoor Exhibition Inside, the museum traces the history of Lithuanian railways from the 19th-century Tsarist era to the present day. On display are authentic signalling and communications equipment, uniforms, documents, tickets, and railway administration tools. A separate room houses a model collection with a miniature railway network featuring stations, bridges, and tunnels. Great for Families The museum is especially well suited for families with children – authentic equipment you can touch and climb on captivates even the youngest visitors. Parents can read about industrial history while children explore real locomotives. A visit takes 1–2 hours, and the entry price is very modest. Getting There The museum is located right next to Vilnius railway station – perfect to combine with arriving in the city or a day trip to Trakai Castle. Free parking is available nearby.
