St. John the Baptist and St. John the Apostle and Evangelist Church
The Church of St. Johns – one of the oldest and most significant churches in Vilnius – stands on St. John's Street in the heart of the University Quarter. Founded on Gothic foundations and later remodelled in Baroque style, it has marked Vilnius' spiritual and intellectual life for six centuries. History: From Gothic to Baroque The church was founded in 1387 on the initiative of Jogaila and Vytautas – the same year Lithuania adopted Christianity. The original Gothic structure was reconstructed several times in the 16th–18th centuries. The current facade is an 18th-century Baroque masterpiece, one of the finest examples of the style in Vilnius. Since 1571 the church has belonged to Vilnius University and remains its official chapel to this day. The Bell Tower – A Vilnius Landmark The graceful bell tower of St. Johns' Church is one of the most photographed views in the Old Town. Its silhouette is visible from Pilies Street, the University courtyards, and even from Gediminas Hill. Built in stages and completed in the 18th century, the tower shows a dialogue between Renaissance and Baroque styles. Interior and Chapels The church interior impresses with its abundance of spaces and details. Eleven chapels, Baroque altars, fresco fragments, and rich sculptural decoration create a space where every corner reveals something new. The high altar and the ornate retables of the side chapels are particularly striking. Practical Information The church is located on St. John's Street, right next to Vilnius University and just steps from Cathedral Square . Entry is free. Regular masses are held throughout the week.
