Saint Catherine's Church
St. Catherine's Church – one of the most refined examples of Vilnius Baroque – stands on Vilniaus Street in the heart of the Old Town. Originally a Benedictine convent church built in the 18th century, it endured decades of neglect and Soviet-era conversion before being painstakingly restored and reborn as a classical music venue. From Convent to Concert Hall The Benedictine community settled in Vilnius in the 17th century. Their church, adorned with elegant Baroque facade elements and spacious vaulted ceilings, served as an important spiritual and cultural site in the city. After the 1831 uprising, tsarist authorities closed the convent, and the building spent two centuries serving secular purposes: warehouses, offices, and even a sports hall. Fully restored and returned to public life, the church has become one of Vilnius' most intimate concert spaces. Its unique acoustics, Baroque architectural setting, and warm atmosphere attract both local and international performers. Architecture and Interior The facade features characteristic Baroque elements – pilasters, relief ornamentation, and balanced composition reflecting the craftsmanship of 18th-century Vilnius artists. Inside, fragments of frescoes and arched niches bear witness to the church's original sacred purpose. Tall windows allow light to play across white walls, creating a distinctive atmosphere that enhances every musical moment. Concerts and Events Today St. Catherine's Church is a popular venue for chamber music recitals, choral performances, and international festival concerts. If you are planning a visit, it is worth checking the events schedule in advance – the building is most often open during performances. The church is just steps away from Vilnius Cathedral and St. Casimir's Church .
