Vilnius University

It is said that we discover the most interesting things when we get lost. This time, we invite you to get lost intentionally – in Vilnius University . And we guarantee: this will be the best way to get lost in the Old Town. The university is not just a place for studies. It's a city within a city, where buildings, courtyards, and centuries of history are so intertwined that you can wander here for hours without a map. 13 Courtyards – 13 Stories The current university ensemble consists of 13 courtyards , named after famous alumni and professors. We challenge you – find them all. Each courtyard has its own character, its own atmosphere. Some are spacious and sunny, others are narrow and a little mysterious. And in one of them hides a surprise – the highest building in the Old Town . Bell Tower of St. Johns Church – 45 Meters Up From the street, it certainly doesn't look that big. But once you climb up – a panorama unfolds that you won't see anywhere else. An observation deck is installed at a height of 45 meters , from which you can see all of Vilnius Old Town , Gediminas Castle Tower and far beyond them. But don't rush straight to the top – stop on the second floor. There swings Foucault's pendulum . It slowly, throughout the day, gradually changes its position – and thus proves that the Earth rotates around its axis. The only one of its kind in Lithuania. Library: 5 Million Books and One Unique Copy Vilnius University Library is easy to find – and very easy to get lost in. More than 5 million publications and manuscripts are stored here. It is one of the largest libraries in the region. But quantity is not the most important thing. The library preserves one of two known original copies of Martynas Mažvydas Catechism in the world – the first Lithuanian book, printed in 1547. The second copy is in Königsberg. Only two. In the whole world. From Golden Thoughts to Amber After leaving the library – it's just 260 steps to the Amber Museum Gallery . If you haven't visited yet – it's definitely worth a stop. And if you've already been – well then, head straight to St. Anne's Church , which is even closer to the university.
