Arvo Pärt: Greatest Works | NIKO with Orchestra, cond. Gediminas Gelgotas

A special evening of Arvo Pärt's music comes to Vilnius: his most celebrated works in one concert This autumn, Lithuanian audiences have a special evening in store – a single concert bringing together a programme of the most famous works by legendary composer Arvo Pärt, the pieces that brought him worldwide recognition. On October 18, the concert "Arvo Pärt. Greatest Works" at the LVSO Concert Hall will gather into one evening the most significant works of the celebrated Estonian composer, the most frequently performed of all living classical composers in the world. On this evening, the audience will have a unique opportunity to hear music that has become an important part not only of this composer's output, but of the entire canon of contemporary classical music. The unique concert will feature the Vilnius city ensemble NIKO with orchestra and conductor Gediminas Gelgotas , performing the legendary composer's works. Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, who celebrated his 90th birthday last year, is one of the most significant living authors in the world. Alongside composers such as Philip Glass, Steve Reich and John Adams, he is regarded as one of the key figures in contemporary music. The renowned minimalist Steve Reich has said of his colleague's phenomenal music: "He is a completely non-trend-following composer, and yet he's enormously popular." Arvo Pärt earned worldwide fame through the unique "tintinnabuli" style he created (from Latin tintinnabulum – a bell). In "tintinnabuli" music, highly concentrated material expresses the composer's special relationship with silence, and the style itself reveals the composer's philosophy, closely linked to Christian values, religious practice, and the pursuit of truth, beauty and purity. The concert will feature legendary works by Pärt – the elegiac and hypnotic "Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten", the peace prayer "Da Pacem Domine", the ascetically transparent "Summa", "Fratres", one of the composer's most frequently performed works, "Tabula rasa", which brought Pärt worldwide fame, and "Trisagion", one of the most significant works of his later period. Arvo Pärt's most famous works will be performed at this concert by the Vilnius city ensemble NIKO – one of Lithuania's most prominent ensembles, which has earned international acclaim for its original and visual performances. The musicians play from memory, combining top-level string mastery with subtle visual staging. Consistently sought after by audiences in Lithuania and abroad, the ensemble has performed in such prestigious venues as the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, St Martin-in-the-Fields and the Roundhouse in London, the Tonhalle in Zurich, and the Grand Théâtre de Provence in Aix. NIKO also performed during the visits of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Pope Francis to Lithuania, and has performed for Queen Sonja of Norway, and has collaborated with numerous internationally acclaimed artists – Kristjan Järvi, David Geringas, Mari Samuelsen, David Nebel, Peter Gregson, Ksenija Sidorova, and Francesco Tristano. NIKO was founded in 2006 by composer and conductor Gediminas Gelgotas, whose own music is performed in prestigious concert halls and festivals across Europe.
