Guided Tour of Dalia Mažeikytė’s Exhibition "20th Century MADONNA"

We invite you to explore Dalia Mažeikytė’s drawing exhibition "20th Century MADONNA" and delve deeper into the artist's work together with gallerist Vilma Jankienė. The tour will take place on July 5 at 12:30 PM. Tickets: €5, available at the venue. Dalia Genovaitė Mažeikytė’s drawing exhibition is an intimate, meditative journey through one of humanity's oldest images – the archetype of the Madonna. The cycle "20th Century MADONNA", created between 1986 and 1988, emerges today as a relevant dialogue between the modernist art tradition and the universal feminine spirit. In this new exhibition, Dalia Genovaitė Mažeikytė seeks answers to the role of women in modern times, breaking the archetype of the Madonna. The exhibition stands out because the artist does not depict static images of sacred iconography – these are moving, breathing figures in which femininity and divinity intertwine into a single, inseparable vibration. “This cycle of works has never been shown publicly, so its 'discovery' right now, decades after its creation, is a kind of miracle. The symbolic expression of the Madonna is highly unexpected yet incredibly powerful, even though it departs from realistic representation. It evokes the treasury of world-renowned artists, and the author herself shared that she was inspired by the work of Salvador Dalí and the metamorphoses of drawing. In Dalia’s works, the main focus is on visual paradoxes, spontaneity, and lightness; in her drawings, the Madonna is synthesized into architectural forms and geometric shapes, while the overall content speaks of a woman's independence, the freedom to be herself, and breaking stereotypes. The body of the Madonna in the drawings is sensual, reminiscent of whirlwinds, spins, sculptures, and the like. This is intriguing and evokes broader associations about the role of women in modern society,” says exhibition curator Vilma Jankienė. (Excerpt from a text by Karolina Kupstaitė)
