Final of the IV International Virgilijus Noreika Singing Competition
The stage never changes. What changes are those who dare to step onto it. The International Virgilijus Noreika Singing Competition is one of the most important events in Lithuanian vocal art, bringing together the most promising opera soloists from around the world. The final round of the competition – a gala concert – invites you not only to immerse yourself in the excitement of the competition and cheer on your favorites, but also to be among the first to hear voices that may become the brightest stars of the opera stage in the future. The competition is dedicated to one of the most eminent Lithuanian opera soloists – the outstanding tenor Virgilijus Noreika, whose artistic activity and contribution to the development of Lithuanian vocal culture remains an important source of inspiration for today’s performers. Virgilijus Noreika himself actively contributed to the founding of the competition and the shaping of its traditions – he took part in drafting the competition’s regulations and was a member of the jury of the first competitions. The final of the IV International Virgilijus Noreika Singing Competition will feature the most talented competitors, selected by an international jury. Together with the Symphony Orchestra of the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, they will each perform two chosen opera arias and compete for the competition’s main awards. This year the competition attracted the interest of 180 singers from four continents. Singers from 34 countries around the world took part in the qualifying round. 82 participants have been invited to take part in the first round of the competition, arriving from as many as 27 countries, including representatives from South Korea, Ukraine, Lithuania, Germany, Latvia, China, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Poland, Georgia, Slovakia, the Philippines, Israel, the USA, Croatia, Italy, France, Canada, Bolivia, Estonia, Mongolia, Norway, Austria, Serbia, Armenia, Portugal, and Mexico. The final concert will be conducted by one of the most prominent opera conductors in the Baltic states, Mārtiņš Ozoliņš – chief conductor of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet. Over the course of his career he has conducted numerous operas, ballets, and concerts, and has collaborated with renowned European and Asian orchestras, including the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste, the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Georgian State Opera, and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. After the final concert, the competition’s laureates will be announced and an awards ceremony will take place.
