Guided tour of the exhibition “Hidden Within” with a museum guide

We invite you on a journey through time – to see the 16th-century regalia of the rulers of Lithuania and Poland and to discover the dramatic history of the treasury of Vilnius Cathedral, from the concealments of 1655, 1939 and 1991 to the discoveries of 1931, 1985 and 2024. In 2024, the burial regalia of King Alexander Jagiellon and Queens Elisabeth of Habsburg and Barbara Radziwiłł were discovered in the crypts of Vilnius Cathedral: crowns, a sceptre and an orb. These treasures first came to light in 1931, after an exceptionally severe flood of the Neris and Vilnia rivers struck Vilnius. In 1939, at the outbreak of the Second World War, when the treasury could not be safely evacuated, the Cathedral itself became its most reliable hiding place. On the tour we will look at the resonance of the treasury’s discoveries and the circumstances of its concealments. You will learn what the funerary insignia placed in the royal graves symbolised, and you will also become acquainted with the other treasures found in the hiding place in 2024: the queens’ jewellery, testifying to the craftsmanship of Renaissance goldsmiths, a collection of precious stones, panels from the Chapel of St Casimir in Vilnius Cathedral and votive offerings. Duration of the tour – 1 hour. Price of the tour – EUR 1 + visitor ticket (EUR 10, reduced – EUR 5). Reductions apply on presentation of a valid concession document.
