Chiune Sugihara Sakura Park

Chiune Sugihara Sakura Park is a peaceful park on the banks of the Neris River, gifted to Vilnius by Japan in 2001 to honour the memory of Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara. In 1940, while serving as Japan's Consul in Kaunas, Sugihara issued thousands of visas to Jewish refugees fleeing the Holocaust, saving approximately 6,000 lives at great personal risk. The park is planted with Japanese sakura (cherry blossom) trees, which in spring produce a breathtaking, if brief, display of white and pale-pink blossoms. The cherry blossom season in Vilnius attracts many visitors each year who come to see this symbolic beauty. A memorial stone and information boards in the park recall Sugihara's heroic act. The park is located on the Neris riverbank in the Žvėrynas district, close to Vingis Park . It is a quiet, meditative place, ideal for a riverside walk – especially in April and May when the cherry trees are in full bloom. Free to enter, open 24 hours.
