Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights (KGB Museum)

The Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights – one of the most powerful and moving places in Vilnius. Formerly known as the Museum of Genocide Victims, it is housed in the former KGB headquarters, where Lithuanian freedom fighters, political prisoners and others were detained, interrogated, tortured and executed during the Soviet occupation. This is not an easy place to visit, but that is exactly why it matters. It reveals a side of Vilnius shaped by the painful 20th-century history that helps visitors understand the true cost of Lithuania's freedom. What will you see? The main exhibition covers Lithuania's occupations, Soviet terror, deportations, partisan resistance and the struggle for independence. One of the most powerful parts of the museum is the former KGB internal prison – cells, detention spaces and interrogation rooms that remain largely as they were found in August 1991 when KGB officers withdrew from Lithuania. Brief history The museum was established in 1992 in the former KGB building in Vilnius. It was previously called the Museum of Genocide Victims; its current official name is the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights. The building itself served as the KGB headquarters and internal prison during the Soviet era. How long to visit? Allow 1.5–2 hours to see the main exhibitions and the former KGB prison. After your visit, you can take a walk around nearby Lukiškės Square or explore Lukiškės Prison 2.0 . For more culture, MO Museum is also nearby.
