National Museum of Lithuania
The National Museum of Lithuania is the oldest and largest history museum in the country, housed in the Arsenal building at the foot of Gediminas Castle Hill . Founded in 1855, the museum has spent nearly two centuries collecting and preserving Lithuania's most significant cultural and historical treasures. The permanent exhibition spans an extraordinary range – from the Stone Age to 21st-century Lithuania. Visitors can explore archaeological finds from the earliest settlements, admire authentic folk costumes, ancient jewellery and silverware, and trace the full arc of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania's rise and fall. Dedicated sections cover the Wars of Independence, the interwar period, and the Soviet occupation. The museum's collections exceed 800,000 items, including one of the most extensive numismatic collections in the Baltic states, rare historical documents, photographic archives and ethnographic artefacts. Temporary exhibitions run alongside the permanent displays throughout the year. The location is unbeatable: the museum sits directly beside Gediminas Castle , the Palace of the Grand Dukes and Vilnius Cathedral . It is the ideal first stop for anyone who wants to understand Lithuania's history in depth before exploring the rest of Vilnius Old Town . Educational programmes are available for families and school groups.
