Literatų Street
Literatų Street is a small but extraordinary street in Vilnius Old Town, famous for a unique open-air art project: both walls of the street are covered with ceramic, metal, glass and mixed-media memorial plaques dedicated to writers, poets and cultural figures. This distinctive memorial now comprises over 200 works and grows every year. The project was initiated in 1997 by sculptor Rimas Sakalauskas. Each plaque is an original miniature artwork that commemorates Lithuanian, Polish, Jewish and other cultural figures connected to Vilnius. The street symbolises the multicultural heritage of Vilnius and the continuity of traditions from the city once known as the Jerusalem of the North. Literatų Street begins at Town Hall Square and runs towards the Vilnius University complex. A walk along it pairs naturally with a visit to nearby Castle Street . Free to visit and truly memorable.
