Lukiškės Square
Lukiškės Square is one of the most important public spaces in central Vilnius. This large, open city square near Gediminas Avenue is where history, national memory, everyday city life and modern Vilnius all meet. Today, Lukiškės Square serves as a place for rest, events and gatherings: national celebrations, concerts, summer events and winter activities all take place here. What will you see? The square covers 3.5 hectares with paths, decorative plantings, benches, a children's playground and a café. Beneath the square is an exhibition centre covering the square's history from Tsarist Russia through the Soviet era. The square sits next to the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights and Lukiškės Prison 2.0 , making it easy to combine all three in one walk. MO Museum is also nearby. Brief history The square took shape as a city space in the 19th century. In 1860 the area became a large market and was gradually integrated into the city. In the Soviet era it was used for ideological ceremonies. After Lithuanian independence it became one of the most debated spaces in Vilnius, discussed intensely as a symbol of national memory.
