Lukiškės Prison 2.0
Lukiškės Prison 2.0 is one of the most unexpected and fascinating places in Vilnius. For over a century it was a closed-off territory surrounded by high walls and barbed wire. Today it is a cultural, music, art, and events space right in the city centre. This is a place where Vilnius clearly demonstrates its ability to transform: a former prison has become a living cultural venue where you can hear a concert, take a guided tour, visit an exhibition, sit in the courtyard, or simply experience one of the most unusual atmospheres in the city. Why visit? Lukiškės Prison is not a typical tourist attraction. There is no polished museum sterility here. Instead, this place is powerful precisely because it has retained much of its authenticity — high walls, corridors, cells, inner courtyards and the particular feeling of walking through a space that was completely closed to ordinary citizens for a long time. The prison was closed in 2019, and today it hosts guided tours, events, art exhibitions, and even overnight stays in the cells. It gained international attention when it was used as a filming location in Season 4 of the Netflix series "Stranger Things". What to see Upon arrival, the territory itself makes an impression — a large enclosed complex in the city centre that looks severe from the outside, but inside reveals a completely different world: events in the courtyard, bars, people gathering, while historical walls serve as a backdrop for concerts, exhibitions, and contemporary culture. If you want to see more than just the courtyard, it is worth joining a guided tour. You can learn how the prison operated, see the cells, solitary confinement, and hear stories about different periods in the building's history. Brief history Lukiškės Prison began operating at the start of the 20th century and was considered one of the most modern prisons in the Russian Empire. Over more than a century it operated under different authorities — Tsarist Russia, Nazi occupation, the Soviet era, and independent Lithuania. The last prisoners were transferred in 2019. Lukiškės Prison 2.0 today Today it functions as a space for music, contemporary art, design, and culture, united by a community of over 300 artists. Concerts, film screenings, theatre performances, markets, exhibitions, and various city events take place here. In summer it often becomes one of the most vibrant alternative culture venues in Vilnius.
