National Gallery of Art
The National Gallery of Art – the largest exhibition of 20th–21st century Lithuanian art in the country – is housed in a Modernist building on Konstitucijos Avenue on the right bank of the Neris. Its collection of over 40,000 works includes paintings, sculptures, graphics, photography, and installations from the interwar period to the present day. A Century of Lithuanian Art The permanent collection features the most prominent works by Lithuanian artists of the 20th century: interwar Expressionists, Socialist Realist works of the Soviet period, unofficial avant-garde, and contemporary art. The gallery is the essential place to understand how Lithuania built its visual identity through occupations, resistance, and independence. The Building: Soviet Modernism The gallery building, constructed in 1967, is one of the best-preserved examples of Soviet Modernism in Vilnius. Its severe lines and monumental scale contrast with the Baroque architecture of the Old Town, yet inside they create ideal conditions for contemporary art displays. The building itself is considered an architectural monument. Temporary Exhibitions Beyond the permanent collection, the gallery regularly hosts temporary exhibitions featuring both Lithuanian and international artists, often linked to significant cultural events or international collaboration projects. Practical Information The gallery is located on Konstitucijos Avenue, near MO Museum . It can be reached on foot from the Old Town via the Green Bridge or by public transport.
