Palace of the Grand Dukes

The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania – the reconstructed residence of Lithuania's rulers on the grounds of Vilnius Lower Castle – is one of the most impressive witnesses to Lithuanian history. It was here that the Jagiellonian dynasty shaped not only Lithuania's destiny but the political landscape of all of Central Europe. From Grandeur to Ruins and Rebirth The palace was built in the 15th and 16th centuries as the official residence of the Grand Dukes. The Renaissance and Gothic complex was among the largest and most lavish in Europe at the time, receiving envoys from Rome, Venice, Moscow, and Constantinople. As the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth declined in the 17th century, the palace was gradually abandoned. During the Russian Imperial period, the building was demolished and replaced with military barracks. After Lithuania restored its independence, an ambitious reconstruction project was launched. Drawing on historical records, archaeological finds, and iconographic sources, the palace was rebuilt and opened as a national museum in 2009. Museum Collections The museum now holds one of the largest medieval and Renaissance art collections in the Baltic states. On display are original archaeological finds – floor tiles, ceramics, weapons, and jewellery – uncovered during excavations. Separate halls trace the history of the Jagiellonian dynasty, diplomatic relations, and Vilnius' role as a Renaissance city in Europe. Particularly impressive are the authentic palace cellars, where different historical layers are visible beneath your feet – original medieval floor tiles still in place. Practical Information The museum is located on Arsenalo Street, next to Vilnius Cathedral and Gediminas Hill. Allow at least 2–3 hours for a thorough visit. An audio guide is available in several languages.
