Town Hall Square
Town Hall Square is a historic open space in Vilnius Old Town that served as the city's centre of life for centuries. The square is dominated by the 18th-century Neoclassical Town Hall, now used as an art gallery and events venue. Historically this was the site of markets, public ceremonies and city assemblies. The square is one of the most inviting spaces in the Old Town. Around it cluster cafes and restaurants with outdoor terraces, small galleries and craft shops. During festive periods – Christmas, Shrovetide, Midsummer – festivals are held here, a large Christmas tree is erected, and a fair takes over the square. It's close to Castle Street and Halės Market . The Town Hall building is itself an architectural gem – a Neoclassical rotunda with portico and tower designed by Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevičius. The square makes a pleasant stopping point between sightseeing destinations. In the evening, lit by lanterns, it has a particularly romantic atmosphere. From here begins Literatų Street , known for its memorial plaques honouring writers.
