Simonas Daukantas Square
Simonas Daukantas Square – the quiet centre of Vilnius Old Town – is one of the most elegant and historically charged urban spaces in the city. Nestled between the Presidential Palace and Vilnius University, it is where state power, academic life, and the everyday rhythm of the city converge. The Presidential Palace and Its Museum The northern side of the square is dominated by the Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania – a Neoclassical building with a history stretching back to the 15th century. The palace served as a residence for rulers of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Russian governors-general, and Napoleon himself. Today it is the working residence of the Lithuanian president, and it houses an open-to-visitors Presidential Palace Museum – where you can tour historic rooms, explore the history of Lithuanian statehood, and see how the building changed through the centuries. It is one of Vilnius' least-known yet genuinely rewarding attractions. Vilnius University – Steps Away Just across Universiteto Street begins the labyrinth of Vilnius University courtyards – one of the most beautiful architectural ensembles in Eastern Europe. The university and Daukantas Square are barely a minute's walk apart; many visitors combine both in a single route. Nearby is also St. Johns' Church with its graceful bell tower. The Square: Space and Atmosphere Daukantas Square has a calm, unhurried rhythm – no commerce or noise, just a gently green courtyard with benches and linden trees. In summer it hosts cultural events and concerts; at any time of year it offers a quiet moment in the middle of an intensive Old Town itinerary. The square is named after the distinguished Lithuanian historian and educator Simonas Daukantas (1793–1864). Getting There The square is at the junction of Universiteto and Daukanto streets, a 5-minute walk from Cathedral Square or 3 minutes from Pilies Street.
