St. Peter and Paul Church
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Antakalnis is one of the most magnificent Baroque masterpieces in Vilnius and across Europe. Built in the second half of the 17th century at the behest of Lithuanian Grand Hetman Michał Kazimierz Pac, it astonishes with more than 2,000 sculptural compositions covering the walls and ceilings from floor to vault. The interior is a true treasure trove of Baroque art: white stucco figures and a tapestry of scenes from the Bible, mythology and history create a fantastical, almost theatrical effect. In the central nave hangs a large boat-shaped chandelier – tradition holds that those who touch it will soon return to Vilnius. The church stands on the heights of Antakalnis, a short distance from the Old Town centre, offering visitors a quieter setting. Nearby are the gates of Vilnius Old Town and the Green Bridge over the Neris River. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is a must on any itinerary for those interested in Baroque art or Vilnius's sacred architecture.
