Museum of Applied Arts & Design
The Museum of Applied Arts and Design is housed in one of the most impressive buildings in the Vilnius Old Town – the 15th–16th century Arsenal, the oldest surviving defensive structure in Lithuania. It holds a collection of Lithuanian and international applied arts and design spanning from the Middle Ages to the present. The Building: History of the Arsenal The Arsenal building provides a unique historical setting for the museum. Built in the 15th–16th centuries as part of Vilnius' defensive system, it once stored weapons and military supplies. Its surviving Gothic walls, vaulted ceilings, and courtyard create a distinctive atmosphere in which exhibits seem to grow naturally from the walls themselves. The building is a state-protected architectural monument and worth seeing in its own right. Collection: From Textiles to Photography The museum holds over 40,000 exhibits from different periods and cultures. The permanent collection includes Lithuanian textiles and fabrics, jewellery and metalwork, ceramics and glass, book and graphic art, costume history, and a photography archive. Of particular significance is the Lithuanian folk art collection – woven sashes, examples of cross-crafting, and traditional furniture representing centuries of craftsmanship. Design and Contemporary Art Exhibitions Beyond the permanent collection, the museum actively organises temporary exhibitions presenting contemporary Lithuanian and international design – from fashion and industrial design to visual communication. Practical Information The museum is located on Arsenalo Street, right next to the Palace of the Grand Dukes and Cathedral Square . It is a branch of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art.
