Užupis

Užupis is one of Vilnius's most fascinating and creative neighbourhoods, separated from the Old Town by the Vilnelė river. On 1 April 1997, the district symbolically declared independence and has since been known as the Republic of Užupis. This 0.6 km² republic has its own constitution, angel, anthem, flag and a uniquely bohemian spirit. What to see in Užupis Užupis Bridge — the first stop. Crossing from the Old Town side, you immediately enter a different Vilnius mood and the territory of the Republic of Užupis. Užupis Angel — the district's central symbol. It stands in the main square on an 8.5-metre column, its trumpet proclaiming Užupis's rebirth and artistic freedom. The Constitution on Paupio Street — one of the most photographed spots. The Republic of Užupis's constitution is displayed on a wall in several languages. Its articles are both philosophical and absurd: the right to be happy, the right to love, the right to understand nothing. Art Incubator — the first art incubator in the Baltic States, operating in the heart of the Republic of Užupis. You'll find galleries, artists' studios, sculptures and installations. Walk along the Vilnelė — the river gives the district a quieter side. Following the scenic path beneath Užupis Bridge, you can discover the Swings of Fate — one of Užupis's most talked-about landmarks. Cafés and food Užupis has a strong neighbourhood café culture. Stop for coffee, grab a pizza at Užupis Pizzeria, or sit at one of the spots around Angel Square. Nearby Paupys complements the visit with Paupys Market, restaurants and contemporary architecture. Republic of Užupis Day 1 April is special in Užupis — the district's independence day, marked by performances, events and symbolic rituals. One of the best occasions to feel the Užupis sense of humour and community spirit.
