Church of Sts. Peter and Paul
St. Peter and Paul's Church is one of the most spectacular Baroque monuments in all of Eastern Europe and an absolute must-see in Vilnius. This white church in the Antakalnis district, built between 1668 and 1704 at the commission of Lithuanian Grand Hetman Kazimierz Pac, astonishes not with its exterior but with what lies within: over 2,000 white stucco figures covering the walls, vaults and columns from floor to ceiling. Interior: A Kingdom of Sculpture Stepping through the church doors, visitors are greeted by an extraordinary sight — a white space shimmering with hundreds of figures: angels, apostles, biblical scenes, mythological motifs and scenes from everyday life woven into one breathtaking ensemble. This is not painted fresco decoration — it is a three-dimensional sculptural space , created by Italian masters Pietro Perti and Giovanni Maria Galli. Key highlights: The high altar — monumental, covered in sculptures with golden accents Tomb of Kazimierz Pac — the patron's burial slab in the church floor bearing the inscription "Hic iacet peccator" (Here lies a sinner) Lion-head waterspouts — Gothic elements above the entrance contrasting with the Baroque interior Side chapels — each with its own decorative scheme and altarpieces History and Founder Construction was initiated by the Lithuanian Grand Hetman and Voivode of Vilnius Kazimierz Jonas Pac , who wished to build a representative family chapel and monastery. Building took over 30 years — from 1668 to 1704. Italy's finest craftsmen were brought to Vilnius to carry out the interior decoration, creating a work unrivalled in the entire region. The church belonged to the Lateran Canons Regular and remains an active place of Catholic worship. During the Soviet period it was briefly used as a warehouse but its architectural heritage survived intact. Visiting Tips The church is located in the Antakalnis district, about 10–15 minutes on foot from Užupis or the Old Town . We recommend visiting in the morning hours when there are fewer visitors and the best daylight falls on the white sculptures. Entry is free , though donations for church upkeep are warmly welcomed. As an active place of worship, please maintain respectful quiet, especially during Mass.
