Vilnius University Botanical Garden
The Vilnius Botanical Garden is one of the largest and oldest botanical gardens in the Baltic states, founded in 1781. Maintained by Vilnius University, it covers more than 200 hectares on the banks of the Neris River in the northern part of Vilnius. The garden cultivates over 10,000 plant species from around the world. Particular highlights include the tropical and subtropical greenhouse where exotic plants from Africa, Asia and the Americas can be seen. In spring the garden bursts into bloom with tulips, daffodils and other flowers; summer brings roses and herbs; autumn delights with colourful foliage. The garden also features a rose garden, rock garden and an orchard. The Botanical Garden is an excellent place for families with children and nature enthusiasts. It operates as a scientific and educational centre, and its collections support research at Vilnius University. Nature education programmes for school groups and guided tours are available. Verkiai Regional Park is easily reached from the garden.
