A day trip is more often ruined not by distance, but by the last departure. The train reaches Trakai in 34 minutes, and in Kernavė, the 17.17 val. bus might be the last convenient option to return to the capital on the same day, while Anykščiai's attractions are spread out in such a way that too much time is lost without a car. The five routes presented below are designed for different paces: from a relaxed half-day to a full-day trip. Prices and opening hours were checked in 2026 m. liepą, but it is worth re-checking the schedule for your chosen day before departing.
Back for dinner in Vilnius: Trakai by train
Trakai is suitable for a day when you want to leave the capital after breakfast and return before evening plans. One example of the current schedule: the train from Vilnius departs at 9.25 val., reaching Trakai at 9.59 val. A second-class one-way ticket costs from 3,10 Eur. Schedules change, so choose your time on the LTG Link website according to the specific date.
From Trakai railway station to the Island Castle, Karaimų g. 43C, it is about 2,5 km. Allow 30-35 minutes on foot. If you walk from the station along Vilniaus street and by Lake Totoriškės, you won't need a car or taxi. Arriving by the mentioned train, you can be at the castle around 10.40 val.
From April to September, Trakai Island Castle is open daily from 10.00-19.00 val., an adult ticket costs 14 Eur. From October to March, a ticket costs 12 Eur, working days are shorter, and from December to February, the museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Last visitors are admitted 30 minutes before closing. 1,5 valandos is enough for the exhibition. For a summer Saturday, buy your ticket online at least 1-2 days in advance, especially if there is an event in the town.
After the castle, have lunch on Karaimų street and try kibinai. For a main course and a drink, expect to pay approximately 12-20 Eur. The entire trip for one person, including the train, museum, and lunch, usually fits within 32-40 Eur. Do not plan to visit both the castle and Užutrakis Manor on foot during a short winter day: the distances will consume time that is better spent on one location.
A full day without a car: Kaunas
Dedicate a full day to Kaunas and choose the train, not the bus. Express services connect Vilnius and Kaunas stations in approximately 1 val. 18 min. A regular second-class ticket can cost about 8,60 Eur one way, and when purchased about a month in advance, the dynamic price sometimes starts from 5,16 Eur. Lithuanian domestic tickets are sold 30 dienų in advance, so for a Friday or Sunday evening trip, don't wait until the last day.
From Kaunas station, go straight to the center: along Vytauto prospektas to Laisvės alėja, then to the National M. K. Čiurlionis Art Museum, V. Putvinskio g. 55. The museum is open on Tuesday, Friday, and weekends from 10.00-18.00 val., and on Wednesday and Thursday from 11.00-19.00 val. An adult ticket costs 10 Eur, an audio guide 4 Eur. Visitors are no longer admitted 30 minutes before closing.
After the museum, continue along Laisvės alėja to Vilniaus street and Rotušės aikštė. This direction allows you to traverse the city sequentially, without returning the same way. For lunch in the center, allocate 12-20 Eur, for the evening train, return to the station by city bus or on foot, allowing at least 35 minutes. A one-day budget with the museum, food, and trains is about 32-47 Eur. Do not cram Pažaislis Monastery into the same day: it is on the other side of the city, so the center and museum will become a hurried gap between transfers.
By bus, strictly by the clock: Kernavė
Kernavė is about 35 km from Vilnius, but spontaneous trips here are more difficult than to Kaunas. According to the 2026 m. vasaros tvarkaraštį, a daily bus from Vilnius bus station departs at 7.20 val. and reaches Kernavė at 8.25 val. On weekdays, there is a more convenient service at 8.30-9.23 val. For the return, the most important time is 17.17 val., the bus arrives in Vilnius at 18.10 val. If you miss this service, convenient direct alternatives on the same day may no longer be available, so check both, not just the departure, times before your trip.
From the stop, first go to the hillforts. The archaeological site of the State Cultural Reserve of Kernavė is free to visit, and there are fewer groups here in the morning. The museum of the archaeological site is at Kerniaus g. 4A. From April to October, it is open Tuesday-Sunday from 10.00-18.00 val., from November to March from 10.00-16.00 val. On Mondays and public holidays, the museum is closed. An adult ticket costs 6 Eur, a family ticket 12 Eur, and on the last Sunday of the month, admission is free.
During the warm season, from April to October, you can also visit the open-air experimental archaeology exhibition. Have a backup plan for lunch: off-season, catering establishments have shorter opening hours, so take water and snacks from Vilnius. Footwear with a flat sole is not suitable after rain, as the slopes of the hillforts and wooden stairs can be slippery.
Half-day by city bus: Europos Park
Europos Park is in Joneikiškės, Europos Parko g. 300, approximately 19 km north of Vilnius city center. This is a practical option when you don't want to leave your accommodation for the entire day. From Žalgirio stop, bus 66 goes to the museum. The route is seasonally adjusted, so on the same morning, check the JUDU app to see if your chosen service stops at "Europos parkas" stop, and save the return time.
The open-air museum is open daily from 10.00 val. until sunset, in summer the last visitors are admitted at 19.00 val. An adult ticket costs 14 Eur, a student ticket 11 Eur, a child ticket 8 Eur. No reservation is required for individual visits. Allow 2-3 valandas for the area, wear closed footwear, as a large part of the route goes along forest paths. After heavy rain, white sneakers are a poor choice.
Worth a car only for the route: Anykščiai
To Anykščiai from Vilnius by car takes about 1 val. 40 min. You can arrive in the town by bus, but the Treetop Walking Path is in Dvaronių village, Dvaronių k. 5, so for a day trip, a private car allows you to avoid searching for and waiting for taxis.
Depart from Vilnius around 8.00 val., and start your day at the Treetop Walking Path. From April to September, it is open daily from 9.30-20.00 val., in March and October until 18.00 val., from November to February until 17.00 val. An adult ticket costs 5 Eur. The path itself is about 300 m long, rises up to 21 m, and the observation tower platform is located at a height of 34 m. Puntukas Stone is nearby, so no additional driving is needed.
Before your trip, it is essential to check accessibility information. In 2026 m. liepą, it was announced that the tower's elevator was not working, so for people unable to climb stairs, the path and observation deck are inaccessible. After the path, drive to Anykščiai center for lunch, and for the afternoon, choose one additional object, not three. The round trip already takes more than three valandas, so trying to also reach the Treetop Walking Path, Horse Museum, and Kalita Hill usually ends in rushing.
Where the day trip ends
When choosing by simplicity, Trakai wins for a short half-day, Kaunas is suitable for a long city route, Kernavė requires the most precise schedule, and Anykščiai pays off when traveling by car. Druskininkai is also reachable in a day if you plan one main activity, such as a water park, but do not combine the town, Grūtas Park, and SPA into one itinerary. It is better to leave the Hill of Crosses from Vilnius for a trip with an overnight stay in Šiauliai: public transport requires an additional local transfer, so most of the day is spent on the road.
Before buying tickets, check three things: the last return service, Monday museum closures, and seasonally shorter opening hours. If rain is forecast, Kaunas is the safest choice due to the museum and short distance from the station. On a dry day, Kernavė hillforts or Europos Park forest paths allow for the most time outdoors.
