What is already confirmed for Christmas 2026?
The main market will be held in Cathedral Square beneath the city Christmas tree. The announced programme describes stalls run by local businesses and makers. Gingerbread, colourful sweets and mulled wine are among the expected treats, while gift ideas include scented candles, amber jewellery and handmade wooden toys.
The artistic design of the 2026 tree remains secret. It will be revealed during the lighting ceremony on 28 November. Photographs of earlier Vilnius trees therefore illustrate the city's Christmas history; they do not show the unreleased 2026 design.
The festive programme reaches beyond Cathedral Square. It includes a Christmas train through the illuminated Old Town, an open-air ice rink in Town Hall Square, Design Square, the Christmas Run, charity events and festive buses visiting different neighbourhoods. A special projection on the Cathedral Bell Tower is planned for New Year's Eve.
A one-day Christmas itinerary in Vilnius
With one day in Vilnius, do not try to fit in every seasonal event. Start while there is daylight and save Cathedral Square for late afternoon, when the lights are on but the busiest part of the evening may not yet have begun.
- 10:00 - walk through the Old Town. Begin at the Gate of Dawn and follow Didžioji and Pilies streets towards Cathedral Square. Allow 60-90 minutes with stops.
- 12:00 - have a warm lunch. Choose an Old Town restaurant and reserve ahead for a December weekend. Market snacks are better treated as tastings than as your only meal.
- 14:00 - visit a museum or historic interior. December daylight is short. An indoor stop makes the day work even if the weather turns wet or icy.
- 16:00 - visit Cathedral Square. It is usually dark by this time, so you can see the illuminated tree and market without waiting until late evening.
- 18:00 - walk to Town Hall Square. Continue through Pilies and Didžioji streets. If the rink is operating, check that day's opening hours and ticket conditions before joining the queue.
Travelling with small children? Shorten the route to Cathedral Square, one warm indoor break and the Christmas train. Moving a pushchair through the market takes longer during busy weekend evenings.
What to buy and taste
A useful souvenir is one whose origin the seller can explain. Ask who made it, what materials were used and how it should be cared for. This is especially helpful when choosing amber, textiles or wooden crafts.
- Gingerbread and sweets. Both are named in the announced Christmas Market programme.
- Warm drinks. Mulled wine is mentioned in the official preview. Check individual stalls for non-alcoholic choices and current prices.
- Scented candles. The programme highlights Baltic-inspired candles from local makers.
- Amber jewellery. Buy from a seller who identifies the material clearly and can answer questions about provenance.
- Wooden toys. Handmade wooden gifts are another category confirmed in the market preview.

Driving directly to the market is rarely the easiest choice on a festive weekend. Traffic restrictions, occupancy and parking conditions may change. Check current city notices on the day and do not rely on finding a space beside the square.
Families and accessibility
Cathedral Square is an open public space, but winter conditions matter. Wet snow, ice, cable covers, rows of stalls and a dense evening crowd can make movement harder with a pushchair, wheelchair or other mobility aid.
- Visit earlier with children, before the largest evening crowd.
- Check the Christmas train boarding point, timetable, ticket price and pushchair rules once the organiser publishes them.
