Vilnius 3-Day Itinerary: The Complete Guide for 2026

2 min read

Three full days in Vilnius — including a Trakai day trip, Old Town exploration, the best restaurants, and neighbourhood walks. The most complete Vilnius itinerary online.

3 Days in Vilnius: What to Expect

Three days gives you enough time to go beyond the highlights, discover neighbourhood favourites, and make at least one day trip. This itinerary assumes you're based in or near the Old Town and want to see the best of both historic and modern Vilnius.

Day 1: Old Town Essentials

Follow the 2-Day Itinerary Day 1 in full: Cathedral Square, Gediminas Castle, the Old Town streets, Užupis, and the baroque churches. This is the foundation — everything else builds on it.

Evening: Dinner at a traditional restaurant (Lokys, Etno Dvaras, or Medininkai), then a walk through the illuminated Old Town.

Day 2: Museums, Markets & Modern City

Follow the 2-Day Itinerary Day 2: Hales Market, MO Museum, Naujamiestis, Holocaust Museum, and the riverside. This covers the cultural and modern side of Vilnius.

Day 3: Trakai Day Trip + Vilnius Neighbourhood Walks

Morning: Trakai Castle (9:00–14:00)

Take the bus from Vilnius central bus station to Trakai — 40 minutes, €1.50 each way, buses run every 20–30 minutes. The Gothic island castle on Lake Galvė is Lithuania's most iconic sight outside Vilnius. Castle entry: €10 adults, €5 children.

After the castle, walk along the lakeside to try kibinai — the traditional Karaite pastry filled with meat, available at Kibininė restaurant. Allow 3–4 hours for the full Trakai experience. Full Trakai guide →

Afternoon: Back in Vilnius (14:00–18:00)

Return to Vilnius by 2–3pm. Spend the afternoon in areas you haven't explored yet:

  • Šnipiškės (Glass Quarter) — the modern business district across the river; best viewed from the Mindaugas Bridge
  • Antakalnis — quiet residential neighbourhood with the beautiful Bernardine Cemetery and Rasos Cemetery (where Jonas Basanavičius is buried)
  • Pylimo Street corridor — the best street art concentration in Vilnius, plus independent coffee shops and vintage stores

Evening: Final Night in Vilnius

Make your last evening count. Book a table at one of Vilnius's top restaurants (Sweet Root, Amandus, or Džiaugsmas) — they're internationally acclaimed and significantly cheaper than comparable restaurants in Western Europe. Post-dinner: cocktails at Alchemikas or Piano Man jazz bar.

Optional Add-ons for a 4th Day

  • Kaunas day trip — Lithuania's second city, 100km away. Art Deco architecture, excellent museum scene, strong café culture. Train: 1h20. Full Kaunas guide →
  • Paneriai Memorial — a sobering visit to the forest where 70,000+ people were killed during WWII. 10km from Vilnius centre, accessible by suburban train.
  • Kernave — the ancient capital of Lithuania, a UNESCO site with prehistoric mounds. 35km from Vilnius.

Accommodation Recommendations

  • Old Town — most atmospheric; walkable to everything; slightly pricier
  • Naujamiestis — trendy, good restaurants and cafés; 10 min walk to Old Town
  • Užupis — if you want to stay in the artists' district; very limited options but unique atmosphere
