Best Time to Visit Vilnius: Month-by-Month Guide (2026)

A month-by-month Vilnius guide: spring blossom, summer events, autumn walks and jazz, winter visits and historical climate data for planning your trip.

For walking around Vilnius, we recommend May, June or September. Choose your dates for the experiences you want: weather, crowds and hotel prices vary, and no month guarantees a cheaper or quieter stay. Winter offers Christmas atmosphere; October offers jazz. Check the specific programme before booking.

This guide breaks it down month by month so you can pick the perfect window for your trip.

Quick Overview: Vilnius by Season

  • Spring (April-May): parks and blossom; flowering dates depend on the weather.

  • Summer (June-August): long evenings and outdoor events; check dates and availability.

  • Autumn (September-October): foliage walks and jazz; combine outdoor plans with indoor alternatives.

  • Winter (November-February): December festivities and indoor visits. Snow is possible, not guaranteed.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January and February: Winter Atmosphere

Plan short daylight walks with cafés and museums between them. Snow and ice are possible, but check the forecast for your dates. Hotel prices depend on the property, room and booking conditions, not just the season.

Good for: budget travellers, photography, winter atmosphere seekers.

March: Early Spring Transition

In 2026, Kaziukas Fair took place on 6-8 March. This annual craft fair belongs in a March itinerary, rather than an Easter-week recommendation. For a future visit, check the organiser's published dates for that specific year.

March can still feel wintry. Lithuanian Independence Day on 11 March brings commemorations; check the current city programme. Compare accommodation for your actual dates instead of assuming low prices.

April: Spring Arrives

For cherry blossom, visit Chiune Sugihara Sakura Park beside the Neris. Flowering depends on that year’s weather. Check any Easter event dates separately; neither outdoor markets nor a crowd-free visit are guaranteed.

Good for: first-time visitors on a budget, Easter travellers.

May: One of the Best Months

Longer evenings make May useful for park walks and café terraces when they are operating. Check the Europe Day and outdoor-event programme for your dates. Compare real hotel offers, including taxes and cancellation conditions.

Good for: all types of travellers: couples, families, solo.

June: Summer Begins

Around the solstice, long evenings allow more outdoor time. Joninės on 23-24 June is a traditional midsummer celebration with bonfires and songs; individual events have their own schedules. Check accommodation before booking your trip.

Good for: culture lovers, festival-goers. Book accommodation early.

July: Peak Summer

July suits outdoor concerts and evening walks. Busy periods depend on the event and location; it is not automatically the most expensive month. Have an indoor alternative for rain or very hot days.

Good for: those who want maximum atmosphere. Avoid if you dislike crowds.

August: Late Summer

August offers late-summer walks and outdoor activities. Do not assume visitor numbers or prices fall at the end of the month. Check venue opening hours and your forecast before arranging a day out.

September: The Best Month to Visit Vilnius

We recommend September for walks combined with museums and cafés. Check each venue’s hours and current ticket conditions: autumn does not guarantee disappearing queues, cheaper hotels or universal opening. Foliage varies with the weather.

The Vilnius Jazz Festival typically takes place in mid-October (book early). City of Vilnius Marathon often runs in September.

Good for: everyone. Our top recommendation.

October: Golden Autumn

Try autumn walks in Vingis Park, Bernardinai Garden and beside the Neris. For jazz, choose an actual performance from the organiser’s programme. Keep an indoor option and compare hotels for your dates.

Good for: photography, nature walks, jazz fans.

November: Grey But Interesting

Short daylight hours make November useful for a plan mixing cinema, museums and meals indoors. Check screenings, opening hours and reservations. Neither a quiet city nor lower hotel prices can be promised for every date.

December: Christmas Magic

Vilnius transforms in December. The Christmas Tree on Cathedral Square will be lit on 28 November 2026, and the official Christmas Market will run there from 28 November to 27 December 2026. Snow can add to the winter atmosphere, but it is not guaranteed. Dress for your actual forecast rather than treating a seasonal range as a promise.

Good for: Christmas atmosphere seekers, couples, families with children.

Vilnius Weather by Month: Quick Reference

Vilnius: historical monthly means, °C (1991–2020), not forecasts. LHMT.

Vilnius station: historical mean air temperature for each month, including days and nights, for 1991–2020. These are not daytime highs or a forecast for your trip. LHMT, 1991–2020

  • January: −3.7 °C

  • February: −3.1 °C

  • March: 0.7 °C

  • April: 7.4 °C

  • May: 12.9 °C

  • June: 16.3 °C

  • July: 18.5 °C

  • August: 17.6 °C

  • September: 12.6 °C

  • October: 6.8 °C

  • November: 1.9 °C

  • December: −2.0 °C

When to Avoid Visiting Vilnius

  • Busy event dates: compare your plans with the city programme. For a quieter walk, add a park to your Old Town route; restaurant reservations depend on the chosen venue and time.

  • November daylight: plan walks during daylight. The shortest day falls at the December winter solstice, not in November.

Once you have picked a season, the detail lives in the season guides: the summer guide to June, July and August covers the festival calendar, terraces and swimming, and the winter guide to December through February covers the Christmas market, museum season and what the cold actually feels like.

What to Pack: Seasonal Tips

  • Summer (June-August): Light clothes, but bring a jacket for evenings.

  • Spring/Autumn: wear layers and bring rain protection. Check the forecast; mornings and evenings can feel much cooler than the middle of the day.

  • Winter: Warm coat, gloves, waterproof boots. Cobblestones get icy.

Vilnius Key Events 2026

Checked on 4 October 2026: March, June, July and September events are past. Use the organiser’s programme for upcoming visits; do not carry 2026 dates into 2027.

  • March: Kaziukas Craft Fair (Cathedral Square), 6-8 March in 2026

  • June 23-24: Joninės: Midsummer Festival

  • July: Open-air concerts

  • 4–6 September 2026 (past): Vilnius City Days

  • 13 September 2026 (past): Vilnius Marathon

  • October 2026: Vilnius Jazz. The organiser’s banner advertises 14-18 October, but the detailed programme also lists films on 12-13 October and a concert on 19 October. Choose your performance from the detailed programme; a single date range does not cover every listed event.

  • 28 November-27 December 2026: Christmas Market at Cathedral Square; tree lighting on 28 November. Dates published by Go Vilnius. Check the programme before travelling.

Bottom Line: Best Time to Visit Vilnius

May or September are our suggestions for a first walking-focused visit, not weather or price guarantees. For a winter atmosphere, choose January or February and mix short walks with indoor stops. Compare actual transport, accommodation and activity costs before booking.

Vilnius works year-round. The question is just which version of it you want to see.
